I keep hearing a sound in my backyard like a rock being rattled around inside a can (with an amplifier connected to it). Is it an insect of some sort or a bird...I have heard it after dark, but always often during the day.

It sounds like a locust or some type of cicada

Some sort of cicada perhaps. Thats my best guess based on mostly day some night. A frog? A yellow billed cuckoo?

maybe theres a secret society thats using your backyard as its headquarters and thats the sound of the door opening

That sounds like a woodpecker trying to peck a metal pole, sport.

i would say its a stonechat, when they sing it sounds like two stones or metal banging against eachother
