It is true that it was the bloodiest single day battle in the U.S. Civil War, with about 23,000 killed. It is not, however, the bloodiest battle in history, The battle of Sedan had more, the Battle of the Somme had more, Operation Barbarossa had more, etc. It was not even the bloodiest single day battle, though it was certainly a terrible day filled with bloodshed. I've been to the battle site and it is very eerie to walk through the cornfields where they met that fateful morning.
