I asked my brother-in-law, who is deaf, and he replied that the "inner dialouge" he had when he was younger (and could hear) became more images and impulses than words. If he's hungry, rather than think "I should make myself a sandwich" he pictures the sandwich and then goes to get it. If he stubs his toe, rather than cuss at himself, he concentrates on the pain and how to avoid it next time.

Did you ever notice how many deaf people speak in sign language? Of course, it does matter when they became deaf. I think you really meant to ask what blind people are capable of seeing in their mind. When they have memories, are they actually hearing what people said in different settings from their past, can they pick up on the different tones of voice we use, or do they have actually have sensory memories (what the weather conditions were like, did they feel safe and respected, etc.) Good luck with your question

Wow, funny that I should read this question. I helped out a car full of deaf people, they had car trouble and I called a tow truck for them. Well when they do talk they can say stuff its just harder to understand , so I would guess that they would think the same way.

Well if they can read and write, maybe they can guess how it sounds. Some deaf people do well signing and talking a little at the same time.

What? They are as normal as you and I are except they cannot hear. They think the same way you and I do in our heads. Instead of talking in their heads, people who are hearing impaired talk in their head using their hands. Why would you ask such a dump question? Just because someone is handicapped in someway and is not the same as you does not mean they are any different when it comes to thinking in heads.

I suppose it depends on whether they have always been deaf or if they became deaf after they knew how to talk.

They probably think in ideas or words in sign. I don't always think in words, sometimes pictures, memories, ideas, connections. It's probably similar.
I asked my Spanish teacher once if she thinks in Spanish because it seemed weird that everything would have to be translated all the time.

I know what you mean, but I don't know the true answer. I can ask my deaf cousin the next time I see her and ask.

Their deafness doesn't affect the way they think. They also think like normal people do.
