I don't think everyone gets bad pain during their period if they swim. It was probably just a coincidence that the person who said this had pains right when they went swimming but it might be true for some people. Anyway, If you have a water proof special swimming tampon you probably are fine.

NO, definetly NOT healthy.
-When you are on your period, your uterus is open and very vunerable. Even if you use a tampon, your vagina can easily get infected.
-Also, be repectful to the owner of the pool! Don't swim while you're menstrating or pee in the pool.
-I'm sure you have heard not to swim after you've eaten. This is because your body puts most of its energy in digestion and you may easily cramp while engaing in physical activity. And when you cramp [also when you are cramping from your period], you can drown.
The solution: just wait it out. Make sure you are completely off your period (the uterus is closed) before you enter the water, and this includes taking baths. Your friends will understand! If you decide to go the the pool party anyways, wear a tampon; if you get pushed into the pool, the tampon will be your best and only protection against vaginal infections!

thats not true at all. You absolutely can go swimming while on your period, you just need to use a tampon. And it won't cause you pain either, the exercise actually would help with cramps if you have them.

The answer is you can swim. But you must know how to swim first.
Swimming will just clean your genitals since water will get in contact with it. Regarding pain, unless you have other problems like dysmenorrhea, there should be none.

The reasons behind not swimming in a clear pool comes from several sources.
1. If your flow is very heavy and overflowing onto your panties, it will show up in the water around you.
2. A tampon has a string. The string acts as a wick in drawing water up to the tampon. When the tampon becomes saturated the flow is reversed bringing blood down the string. Again, it will show up in the water around you.
3. Using more than one tampon or a larger that you usually use will possibly result in you having difficulty in removing it (them) when you need to.
Solution:
1. Don't swim while on your period.
2. Change the tampon often.
3. Swim in water that is not crystal clear.
The bad pain may have been due to cramping from the period rather than swimming.

You can totally swim! Just use a tampon to stop the bleeding. I've never heard anything negative about using a tampon and swimming. Have fun!

Use a tampon. No one will ever know. I have never experienced pain from swimming while on my period. Make sure your string isn't hanging out of your suit though!
