I wasn't sure from the story on Yahoo whether the oil and supplies that we shipped them was our way of buying them off (like a reward, OR if it was an end to some embargo that we were imposing on them.

It was both, and it wasn't just America. North Korea is so poor they can barely feed their people. Every couple of years they launch a missle or threaten to develop nuclear weapons and act stubborn for a while until western nations (and South Korea) promise them huge amounts of food and fuel to play nice. It's worked very well for them.

Chaulk this up as one of the few Bush Admin successes in the past 4-6 years.

N Korea more or less always got what it wanted by throwing temper tantrums and making dire threats. Bush said 'No more of that'. Eventualy N Korea caved - especially after the Bush Admin tied up a great deal of N Korea's cash.

These developments are strongly positive for the region, and let's hope N Korea learned the lesson well.

I think China bullied North Korea into cooperation. China actually temporarily stopped fuel delivery to North Korea after last year's 'nuke test' in North Korea. North Korea can't survive without China's help. It's either they listen to China or give up communism.
