It's a rework of the old saying, "every dog has his day". It means every human being - at least in the industrialized western nations - gets a little recognition for SOMETHING sometime like Little League, Junior Women's Club, local Flower Clubs, Golf Tournaments, Ruritan's Club, Phi Beta Kappa, wedding announcements, etc,, etc., etc. It's an arbitrary and back handed comment on the importance of each of us as individuals and our worth. It underestimates the worth of you and me and everyone. You can be a HERO to many people and an indispensible treasure to many people in your life. Don't listen to Andy. He was an overrated sicko who was adulated by a bunch of self important syncophants WAAAYYY back in the loser 60's. I know...I was there.

He was saying that all fame is ephemeral, so if you get some media attention, enjoy it while it lasts. This is especially true now, because there are so many artists, and only so many people to buy their work. This quote has become iconic, and has been used to say the same thing about lots of professions.

but perhaps I am taking this too literally...
do we really know ever what an artist means?
