Even if we don't train them up to our standards, there's no excuse for them not having a competent standing military after all this time.

I totally agree, if they aren't trained by now--It can't be done. Excuses, excuses we are tired of all the rhetoric. Our troops are continually being slaughtered and for what----Bring our troops home---NOW. Admit to whatever, end our involvement in Iraq.

Where did you get the information that it takes 8 years to get through basic training? It takes 8-10 years to take entry level soldiers and build them into experienced mid level career junior officers and to build a solid NCO corp. The soldiers who joined early in the conflict are now experienced and trained enough to be relatively similar to SSGs/SFCs and Captains. There's no way they completely compare to their American counterparts, but thats kind of your target with development timelines in Army building. The Afghans have extensive combat experience. Meshing that into a cohesive unit is more complex. No one has called the Republican Guard elite since 1990. "Elite" in the middle eastern world and "elite" in the western world mean two VERY different things.
