multiply 1/2 times n (b/c of means multiply and n is a variable for an unknown number) then subtract 3 (cause it's 3 more than) set that equal to 1/6 times n (of is multiply and you use n again cause its the same number) so..

1/2(n)-3=1/6(n) or if you wanna simplify it:
n/2-3=n/6

Let the number be x

x/2 = x/6 + 3
x/2 - x/6 = 3
(3x - x)/6 = 3
2x/6 = 3
x/3 = 3
x = 9

The number is 9

x/2 = 3 + x/6
x = 6 + 2x/6
x = 6 + x/3
x - x/3 = 6
x(1-1/3) = 6
x(2/3) = 6
x = 6 (3/2)
x = 9

firstly, lets rephrase the fractions...........
one half equals three-sixths, right ??
so -- three-sixths of a number is 3 more then one-sixth of it......
three-sixths minus one-sixth is TWO-sixths
so -- TWO-sixths of the number equals three...........
so -- the number is SIX sixths, = 3 X 3
check result.....one half = four and a half........
and one sixth = one and a half ( that's 3 more )

you REALLY want a formula ?? OK then
let number = X
then X/2 - 3 = X/6
or if you prefer :
X/6 + 3 = X/2

let the number be x

1/2(x) = 1/6(x) + 3
3x/6 = (x + 18)/6
3x = x + 18

You should be able to figure it out from there.
