They don't know its sex. They just didn't want to call it Monster Jerry, tourists wouldn't care.

I don't know. It's a lot like the Elasmosaurus they found out here a few years back. We have a life size re-construction of him at the entrance of town. His name is 'Mo.' Now, how do they know that 'Mo' was a male? By the way, they think that Nessie may be either an Elasmosaurus or a plesiosaur of some sort. I think she may be 'Mo's girlfriend!

Because that's what I started callin' it when we got drunk that one night in the pub. Remember? Just started slurring some crazy nicknames and Nessie seemed to fit.
Of course we've since shortened it to Ness.

I think they call it Nessie because of all the beer they've been drinking. The THINK they see a sea monster and give it a name to lure in tourists.

It could be a pet name in lieu of "Nestor." After all, "Chessie" doesn't sound very feminine, yet that's what Nessie's Chesapeake Bay cousin is called. Perhaps his name is "Chester."

It's more a term of endearment than gender specific.

They flipped her over and peeked at her hoo-hoo. Just like they do with kittens and puppies.
