Both. I was born with a gift with music. I don't think it is at all hard to sing or hear notes and be able to key them on the piano. I didn't think it was a talent until some other people I saw were struggling to do what I was doing. However, I have friends who took voice lessons, and can sing fairly well, so something simple like that to me is to learn by others. Yet I can't skateboard or do cool sports or any other sort of extremely cool displayable talent. Some people can get right up and do it! Besides I am unfortunately too old to try any of that. Not for moms I suppose!

I'm of the school that believes that technique can be taught, but talent has to be developed.
Composition, drafting, brush and pencil techniques have general "rules" and anyone with interest can pick these up. These techniques form a foundation for creating images.
The talent is developed, primarily by practice. The techniques learned allow for early results which encourages more practice. If needed, additional coaching can help channel efforts into greater successes.
I believe this also applies to music. I play guitar, some, but nobody ever accused me of being a great musician. But I MAKE music, and people enjoy my singing and playing. Still, I had to start somewhere, (a few basic chords) and developed a talent from there.
Not everyone can do this. That's because not everyone WANTS to do this.

It's both. To be successful at something it takes 10% talent, and 90% hard work and determination. It's very true too. I sing and play the piano. Some of the music comes naturally to me when I learn how to sing or play the piece, but if I make no effort to make that music better, I can't be successful in turnning those pieces of music into something better...something that'll show myself, if not others, that this is my best. Some are born with the talent and some aren't, but for those who aren't if they don't even bother trying they're not going to get anywhere. For example, I was born with more of the talent in singing than my friend, but she's not giving up. She joined the chorus this past year and is taking voice lessons to help improve her singing. The same goes with me and her for dancing, so she's trying to take dance lessons this year to help her dancing skills that will come in handy in musicals (she's into acting and musical theater). She's making an effort and that's why she's improving more and more as time goes on. Hope this helps =).

You can't learn talent-- thats what makes it so coveted and envied. Its born with you: the capacity to do something with ease when others seem to struggle, to have that special quality, unique in its way to amaze others. Because talent amazes those without it. However, acquired skill, through hard work and perseverance, is what, in my opinion, truly impresses and makes people respect you. Have you seen (or read) Naruto? People seem to accept Rock Lee more than Sasuke, it seems. Or maybe its just Sasuke's grumpy personality and vengeful drive that make some people dislike him. ^.^ In that example, however, it is shown: even without that talent head start, you can reach that level of-- I don't want to use this word, but can't find no other-- skill, and surpass idle beings, if you want to bad enough, like Rock Lee did (though maybe he couldn't beat Sasuke at his current level... ^^;). I think many of the people who answered this question before say the same thing. And its true.

I say both. It's easier if you're born with it, but if you have to learn then you'll probably end up better at it. With singing you just have to practice everyday for a long time and pick songs to learn that are out of your range so that you can train yourself to sing in different ways. With writing music you have to listen to a lot of whatever kind of music you want to write and see how they do it. Use similar words and styles.

You have to be born with a proclivity for certain skills, but then hard work and training can make a person with mediocre skills a star while a person with more natural skill can be left in the dust and unrecognized. LITERALLY you CAN'T make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, however. A million hours of lessons and a million dollars in lessons won't give a dud TALENT.

You are born with the foundation and you can build it. However, you have your whole life to build up a talent. Some people will never be able to be the best, but you can always be great at something if you practice enough.

Talent, by definition, is something inherent. However, skills, such as singing and writing music can be learnt. There is an old saying: music is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration. In other words: if you want to get good at something, work hard at it.

Talent, by definition, is something you are born with. Skill is something you have had to learn. Talents that stand out in any given person are usually combined with skill.
