I am a 19 year old male, and in August I will be embarking on my first trip without someone with me. I am going to Germany to visit a friend for a few days, but then I will be going out on my own to explore. My mom approved of the trip, but now she is freaking out. I don't understand why We have traveled to Germany before, and we both felt very safe, even at night. And I can speak a good amount of German. But she seems to have forgotten that. She thinks I might get robbed or kidnapped, or worse. But I don't think so. I think Germany is much MUCH safer than anywhere in the US. So, is there anyway I can convince her that this won't happen to me? Also I'm visiting Leipzig and Dresden. Is there anything I should look out for in these cities, besides an occasional political demonstration? Sorry if that was a long read.

You're 19, you've traveled there before, you speak some German. You're legally an adult...she needs to let go! Germany is very safe. Sounds like she's been watching too much Fox News lately. The world is much safer than it seems when watching the nightly news. Tell her you'll be fine, you're responsible (well, I assume you are) you'll behave yourself, etc. Have fun.

Germany is actually one of the quieter european countries at the moment.

In general, you should not expect any trouble except for standard big city issues :
- pickpockets
- drug pushers

General guidelines - keep to well lit or crowded areas
Do not carry too much valuables on you (ie. a bit of cash but no real jewelry or iPod (or similar) gear)
Buy things only in shops, not from street vendors

As to your mother - agree that you will send an email / text message every other day to give a "travel update".
(you could even put them in a blog or something later)
At one point, she is going to have to let go.

there are various folk your age who bypass off backpacking and traveling the worldwide on their very own. i'm helpful you are able to shield a visit to Germany. in case you have already met her, you be responsive to she's actual and the internet element quite isn't a controversy, do no longer convey it up with your mothers and fathers. you probably did the sensible element, assembly her once you have been accessible with human beings, so there is not any reason now why you shouldn't bypass, presented you're one hundred% helpful it is secure and it is what you like to do. that's needless to say no longer the priority your mothers and fathers have, consistent with threat they're basically having a complicated time accepting which you're 18 and you like the liberty to bypass off and do your guy or woman element. i could basically e book it and then tell them you're going. Be assertive, do no longer ask them for permission; tell them what you are going to do.

Do you think her worries might stem from the fact that the drinking age in Germany is 18, so you would be able to drink quite legally over there while you can't at home. I flat shared with a girl from Chicago who, at 19, went completely mad for beer while she was over here (UK) because she'd never had the opportunity at home.

My mother used to be rather worried about me traveling too. (It comes with the job of being mother.) Till someone she often met went to Egypt to walk with camels in the dessert, alone.

I think it is a harsh way out, but, if you do not know anyone doing a holiday that is way more daring, start making (fake) plans about doing something more dangerous next year, so this years holiday seems child's play by comparison.

Just reassure her that you will be "super" careful. She just loves you a lot.
