I think "Little Altars Everywhere" moved me so much because I could see the women of my childhood in the characters. My oldest daughter read it and still calls me Vivi when she is teasing about an uppity remark. I call her my Petite Yaya, because she remembers the elephant ride. The follow up, "Divine Secrets of the Yaya Sisterhood" filled in a few blanks, but was not as moving to me as the first book.

They are both awesome, especially if you have some girlfriends with off beat humor to share them with. A southern background helps, but is not necessary. There are deep insights to relationships, so it not all giggles. Good reading, even better sharing.

I read these books out of order, and I'm so glad I did. I first read "Divine Secrets", which has so much more humor and resolution, and then I read "Little Altars", which is much bleaker. Had I read them in the order the events occurred, I don't think I would have continued.

I also remember the elephant ride. Two quotes have stayed with me since reading it: "Life is short, but it's wide," and "Get up on the beast and ride." I have to remind myself of both from time to time. :)
