"If there really is an afterlife, I'll bet the best way to contact it is through a plastic, mass-produced board game from Milton Bradley!" --Mad Magazine

A Ouija board is commonly used in divination and spiritualism, often by friends out to have some fun. Sometimes users become convinced they've been contacted by the spirit world. The board usually has the letters of the alphabet inscribed on it, along with words such as 'yes,' 'no,' 'good-bye' and 'maybe.' A planchette, a small 3-legged device with a hole in the middle or a pointer of some sort, is manipulated by those using the board. However, users often feel the planchette is moving of its own accord rather than responding to their own unconscious muscle movements (ideomotor action). The users ask a "spirit" a question and the pointer slides until it stops over "yes" or "no" or a letter on the board. Sometimes the selections "spell out" an answer to a question asked.

Some users believe that paranormal or supernatural forces are at work in spelling out Ouija board answers. Skeptics believe that those using the board either consciously or unconsciously move the pointer to what is selected. To prove this, simply try it blindfolded for some time, having an innocent bystander take notes on what words or letters are selected. Usually, the results will be unintelligible.

The movement of the planchette is not due to spirits but to unconscious movements by those controlling the pointer. The same kind of unconscious movement is at work in such things as dowsing and facilitated communication.

Here are the facts on Ouija boards.

They were invented in the 1890's. Stories of demonic possession vastly predate this time. In fact, the stories linking demonic possession and Ouija boards only dates back to the 1970's when the movie The Exorcist came out. Suddenly it's the gateway to the devil, even though back in the 1900's, virtually every home had one, and we didn't all start spitting pea soup at each other. At least, it never made the papers, and that kinda thing woulda been news back then.

Ouija boards are made of plywood and paint. The little pointer thing is made of plastic. Not exactly as exotic as the gypsy fortuneteller's crystal ball, is it? But, hey, plywood and plastic can be mass produced and sold cheap, crystal balls are another matter entirely.

I don't personally believe in parapsychology, but if it is real, I regard a talent for communicating with spirits kind of like artistic talent; you either have it or you don't, and buying an easel and a mess of paint won't make you an artist, and neither will a Ouija board link you to the spirit world if you don't already hear voices.

It's a plastic pointer on a plywood board. What self respecting ghost wants to mess with that? Any messages spelled out are someone having someone else on for a laugh.

Your biggest danger in playing with it is that your friends are going to have a good laugh at your expense, and probably will never tell you.

DO NOT mess around with these things.....

Be grateful that you are lucky enough NOT to have had an experience with these.....

As a practicing Pagan High Priestess and Spirit Channel I have used a Ouija board, but rarely and ONLY after performing a Full Ceremonial Circle Casting (amonst other things) for protection.

As an inexperienced person you are ONLY going to draw low level entities to you and an Ouiji board on its own is like opening a your front door and not being able to close it again, you can't tell who will walk in or what they are capable of doing!!!!!

PLEASE dont mess around with this it is not a toy, or a game, it is a serious working tool for VERY experienced practitioners of Magick, and can still be dangerous even for them.

Spirit possession, hauntings, illness and di-ease, are just a few of the negative impacts from using a spirit board.

If you wish to experience the spirits then attend a Spiritualist Church or an open Coven meeting, or speak with an experienced praticioner of magick or a spirit channel, dont attempt it yourself!!!!!!!

The Ouija boards, like the pendulum, and the planchette, are amplifiers of talent already within the operator. If you try too hard or you have no natural talent, it is normal for the board to remain quiescent or make only foolish moves.

There are none of the things many Christians say will cause you harm, for all of them only exist in the minds of Christians who thrive on fear in others and themselves.

All I can say is - THANK GOODNESS NOTHING HAPPENED! I have heard horror stories all over the place about people getting possessed or going mad after using those things. Just stay away from them!

What are you trying to do with it, impress your friends? Just take the sign that it is "not working" as a sign that you are not meant to be messing with it. You have NO CLUE how to control and release entities you conjure and that could prove to be very dangerous for you. And that's all the information about Ouija that I am prepared to give you.
