just curious because i'm a huge Superman fan and was wondering if anywhere in real life was considered his Alter ego "Clark Kent" home.

The metaphorical answer is that Metropolis is New York City in the day, and Gotham is New York City at night.

However, since all three cities exist independently in-setting, they usually put Gotham in New Jersey and Metropolis in Connecticut. It was also established in JLA/Avengers that DC's Earth is slightly larger than the real world, making space for all these extra cities.

Mind you, in Smallville, Metropolis seems to be in the place of Wichita Kansas, and in the oldest comics Metropolis was based on Toronto...so your mileage may vary.

In the "Superman Returns" movie, when the new island rose from the ocean, they showed a map that indicated Metropolis was on the east coast since it was to the left of the island on the map. That sounds like New York to me.

You know, I've always had this "feel" that Metropolis was Chicago. There's something about the architecture that is very similar between the two cities.
