I like to create my own outline, too. I use the following steps.

Click on the text layer.
Use the magic want to select the text (making sure to Alt+click on the centers of some letters like A, and P and D etc...)
Click Select - Modify Expand
Select the amount of outline you want. i usually use 1 or 2 pixels. Click Ok.

Now, create a NEW Layer just BELOW the text layer. .
Use the fill or paint bucket to fill the area on the new layer. Your text is now outlined.

+ Using Type Tool - create your text as you want it
+ Create a new layer and place under your Text.
+ Select all your text by left mouse clicking on the Text layer
+ From the SELECT menu, click on MODIFY and then EXPAND - enter in the number of pixels to create the thickness of the outline for your text.
+ Select the blank layer under the text and using menu EDIT and then option FILL, changing fill options click OK to complete.

Hope that makes sense :)

Not sure with your version, but with any, it should be easy. Just type out your text and then double click the text layer. Go down to stroke layer and choose the color and size.
