Because power corrupts.
And they were well aware that any time a majority can make things better for itself, it will likely do so, regardless of how much the non-majority gets hurt or sidelined in the process.
For this country to live up to its ideal of freedom, justice and liberty for all, the govt (majority) needs to be limited in terms of what kinds of activities it can mandate as a matter of law.

Smaller States like Delaware and Connetticutt would have been at the mercy of the larger states. SO they simply refused to sign the Constitution. It was not until the Senate, in it's original form, was thrown in to limit the role of the popular majority that Delaware would sign.
Before the 17Amendment Senators were appointed by thier State Governments. Thus the States had a real role in the Federal government.

To prevent what they referred to as "The tyranny of the majority". The conflict has always been between large and small states. The trick for any national government was to find compromises which respected these differences while at the same time minimizing their detrimental effect on the nation.
That's why we have 2 houses of Congress, and an Electoral College system. Each state also retains the right to write laws about anything that is not specifically spelled out at the Federal level.

If you're talking about pure democracy then think about the following; a village is made up of 100 women and 101 men. A meeting is held and a vote is taken on whether or not the women should sexually service the men at any time a man wants it. The vote passes and HELLO Ladies. The Constitution places limits on things like that.

To prevent mob rule. The framers of the constitution remembered the reason people left England for the new world. They wanted to ensure people could live their lives and parctice their faith freely regardless of how the majority felt.

Simple -
Mob mentality. When you whip a large group into a frenzy, people tend to do things that they may not normally do to go along with the rest of the group. Example: Nazis and German Citizens.
