I don't believe that the Astros' chances of making the playoffs were damaged by Biggio's chase towards 3,000. First, even if Biggio wasn't close to 3,000, he would still be the starting second baseman, and Loretta would be the back-up as originally thought. Burke was starting in center field so there was no realistic option early on. Then Burke was sent down for Pence, who has lighten up the NL. Back to Biggio, if you look at his average, it isn't what the Astros would like out of their seasoned leadoff man, but it still is respectable. The reason that the Astros are not (well theres always a chance, see the past 3 seasons) going to make the playoffs is because of inconsistencies in the club. Early on the bullpen was fantastic, while the offence and starting rotation suffered. Then the rotation started picking up, and the offence followed shortly, but the bullpen blew with the injury to Brad Lidge. That is why the Astros will not make the playoffs, because they can't get everything working. But theres alot of season left, don't count them out.

Just a glance at their bullpen statistics and a couple of weeks worth of box scores and it can plainly be seen that Craig Biggio had nothing to do with the Astros bad year. He was good box office for a team with serious trouble. That being said, it ain't over yet, and the 'Stros have had two consecutive season's of admirable comebacks. If they don't do it this year it still can't be hung on Biggio.

Biggio's rather poor performance to date certainly hasn't helped matters, but this year's Astros team has weaknesses all over the place.
