It's all OKAY.
The way you've described you menstrual cycle sounds perfectly normal. The flow quickly reaches it peak and then gradually becomes lighter and lighter until it stops, which happens after about a week but sometimes shorter for many women, although generally will be finished for the majority of women by this time (after all even god rested on the seventh day (",) )

When you say birth control I'll assume that you mean oral contraceptives, and yes the pill can indeed reduce your menstrual flow during your period as well as possibly reducing the mood swings and pains which often accompany the onset of you're cycle. Your family doctor should be able to advise you of the options available and discuss any possible pro's and con's.

It may also be interesting to note that just recently a new derivative of the oral contraceptive pill has been released under the brand name Lybrel which is intended to be used as a means of completely eliminate periods.

And remember this is totally normal, and it's all OKAY, well until next month anyway :)

That is completely normal. Periods are always heaviest on the first couple of days. A period can last from 3-7 days. pills may shorten it.

Yes birth control can fix the problem. You also need to tell your doctor about the heavy bleeding. They may want to do an ultrasound of your uterus for fibroids.

What is your family history regarding female problems. The doctor will ask that also.
