I want to go by a different name, but I do not want to have to go through all of the legal stuff. In the state of West Virginia, I have to go to court and file a petitioner. I do not know if I can just do the basic thing where you can just tell people to call you by the new name. I really just want to do the call me by my new name thing. I want to be called Bianca instead of Annetta.

Unless you do it the legal way by petitioning the court (I live in WV too), then your friends and family can call you the new name, but if you apply for a job or put that name on any applications, it could be considered fraudulent (WV is crazy about catching people for fraud). If you really don't like your name, which is a nice name, and you want it to be changed where you can use it all the time (applications, credit, etc.) then do it the legal way. It's not really that expensive and then you'll have to contact the Social Security Administration to have it changed on your SS card and driver's license for a small fee of maybe $5 for the SS card and I think it's $5 to change/renew your driver's license. It's not worth the hassle if you get caught for fraud.

Of course you can. All it's going to be is just a new nickname, not a real name you can write on legal documents.

You can do it -- but, of course, you must remember that if you don't do it "legally" you new name will NOT be your legal name. Your friends may call you by the new name, but it will be totally useless - as far as any legal documents are concerned.

You would still need to use your "legal" name on all official paperwork, including your license, bank accounts, etc.

Other than that, you can go by any nickname you wish.
