Does a typical small block chevy flow water all the time or is there a time its dry? If the thermostat is closed does water still circulate through the pump?

A short answer for you would be to tell you...yes it still pumps. Just not "through" the engine. Keyword being through.

A better understanding of how a waterpump works can be seen when you take one apart. Unlike "pressurized" pumps, an automotive water pump moves water through directional control. When one direction is blocked, the water simply flows around the "vanes/impellers". It moves in a very confined space/area inside the pump and block until the thermostat opens.

Think of it as swiming in a bathtub...while you may be able to "stroke" and the water is moving, you're not going anywhere, and neither is the water.

The water pump is pumping as long as the engine is running, what determines the flow to the radiator is the thermostat. it flows all the time through things like your heater core. On a side note, don't run an engine without a thermostat. The engine and oil NEED to get hot enough to boil off the condensation in the oil.

there are actually two paths that coolant will take in the cooling system, bypass and full flow. the pump is always moving fluid, but the length of travel changes. the thermostat really only blocks off the radiator, the coolant just keeps going through the block until it is warm enough, then it goes through the radiator.

The engine is completely full of coolant. When the thermostat is closed the water pump circulates coolant with in the block.

Water flows when the thermostat opens, when it is closed the water sits still in the engine as it gets hot enough to open the thermostat, but the engine and radiator stay full all the time.

no when the thermostat is closed no water flows but there is enough in the system for gravite to keep water in the pump

water flows all the time but when the thermo opens it then flows through the upper rad hose thru the rad, before that it circulates thru the block and heater core
