Russia was the only good possible place to place the olympics. Salzburg, Austria and Pyongyang, Korea did not have sufficent space for the 2014 Winter Olympics. President Putin also pushed for the 2014 Olympics because Russia has never held a real Olympic event. The commitee thought this point was valid.

Yes! Sochi is a really pretty place, and Russia did hold an Olimpic event, the 1980's Olimpics in Moscow, the U.S. boycotted it.
