Not a good idea genetically. In the UK the Pakistani muslim community has a much higher rate of genetic problems, with serious disability, as consequence of marrying cousins. This causes a high rate of genetic defects unfortunately. Pakistani government should discourage it. It probably does keep money in the family, and the intended marriage partners are not likely to go against existing family interests.

only in some states....that's why you get a lot of southern cousin jokes, because most southern states it's legal.

Interesting fact! You know that incest doesn't cause any deformities....ends up that it just doubles the risk if it runs in the family. But if the family is typically healthy, no worries

I could care less who weds who.....just as long as it's free choice and not some sick cult crap

Too close for comfort. I mean that is as close to incest as you can get, without it being so. First cousins should not marry but I am sure that a lot of states don't check into that. There is a family here close to where I live and that has happened. All the offspring are really mental and two of the kids have birth defects. Don't be marrying into family.

this is a cultural thing...of course its not illegal. Indian and Arabic cultures (to name a few) allow first-cousin marriages, so why and who would have the authority to say its illegal in any country.......

There is no proof substantiating mental and/or physical problems as a result...the poster's comments below are frivilous. I know many first cousins who are married (over 3 decades worth) and not a single one, i repeat not a single one, encountered deformities and/or other birth issues.

It depends on the state, since all such laws are by state.

Some states draw the line to exclude marriages by first cousins, while other states draw the line such that first cousins are not prohibited.

You would need to check the laws in your state to know which one is correct.

One of the most common questions spouses ask when confronting a marriage crisis is this: How can I save my marriage if my partner doesn't want to help find a solution? How do I succeed I am trying to save my marriage on my own? Learn here https://tr.im/isYqb

It is a typical enough story: one partner leaves, the other stays. One remains 'in love', the other is uncertain. Whatever it is that has caused a couple to be apart, the one person who remains bears the prospect, fear, doubt, desire, hope of saving his or her marriage' alone.

Some states legalize first cousin marriage. Ironically perhaps, West Virginia is not one of them.
