Sam-e has its benefits for maintaining normal liver function and healthy joints. It is said that it is a mood enhancer. However there are different sides to depression. If one of the symptoms of the depression is irritability then Sam-e probably wouldn't be a good choice. It has a inhibitor in it that raises you epinephrine so to speak so it could make some individuals edgy and raise the anxiety levels. If just feel you have a case of the blahs then it will be a good pick me up. Another good antidepressant supplement is 5-htp. It is a more subtle approach for treating depression and anxiety hand in hand. It doesn't give you an edgy feeling and it actually works quickly and can be discontinued without any worry. A lot of Naturopaths are giving that one out because the worse case scenario side effect is sleepiness.

I supplement with amino acids for depression and to curb any need of self medicating [long life of substance abuse] It has been a miracle for me. Google Hypothalamus gland and watch the DVD What The Bleep Do We Know. Highly educational. 5-HTP or Tryptophan, as well as Phenylalanine, Arganine, Tyrosine, are some of the beneficial amino acids that aid in mood stability. I hope this helps and GOD Bless and be well

Just that you have to take so many a day, and they are expensive. St. John's Wort does the same thing and is much less expensive, and you only have to take three 300mg caps a day.

Don't take it if you are bipolar. Otherwise, go right ahead.
St. John's wort and 5-HTP are also good natural depression remedies.
Good luck and be well.
