The bereavement list was an addition in the 2002 CBA. It is a short-term (3-5 days IIRC) inactive listing for a player who needs a brief leave to deal with a death in the family. The team can call up a replacement player (and so maintain full headcount strength), and gives a team a shorter option than putting the player on the disabled list (15 days minimum).

The bereavement list was introduced in the latest CBA. It gives teams the option of giving a player a few days of personal leave without understaffing the active roster (another player can be activated or called up), nor have the player sit out at least 15 days on the disabled list. Bereavement lasts up to 7 days.
