think you can guess my opinion but i want to see if im alone in this.
nirvana are still pushed down my throat (genius,f*ck off) and pearl jam were just about the most boring droney thing ive ever heard.
on top of which weve had the most whiney self absorbed music off the back of it and like herpes its not going away.
i know the rock media love it but thats what you expect from middle class media people and the idea its somehow linked to 70s punk is a joke, other than ripping off the damned i dont hear it

You make a real solid argument. I'll give credit to the bands at the front of the movement like Nirvana and AIC. After that, I never had much use for Pearl Jam nor Soundgarden. I liked them even less once modern radio force fed me their songs for over fifteen years. If I never have to hear another PJ song, I'd be good with that. Now that we have Internet and satellite radio, it's starting to get better with most of the grunge finally getting stored in moth balls where it rightfully belongs. Sadly it seems we wasted the first half of this decade still hearing 1992 every damn day.

It's in my opinion that grunge became Mtv's whipping boy because they were tired to the metal hair bands singing about screwing chicks and getting drunk. Unfortunately Nirvana was chosen as the poster boy and we all know how that ended...sadly.
I wonder if Soundgarden and Alice in Chains had worn monkey suits instead of jeans and flannels would they still have been classified as "grunge" since a lot of it seemed more about their attire than the music (such as punk fashion as of lately has produced some of the most un-punk bands I've ever heard in my life).
It's my belief that those bands that everyone is so eager to call "grunge" gained true popularity because of the stripped down, hard rock music and honest lyrics.
If you feel it is "whiny" or "self absorbed" than lucky for you we live in a country where you don't have to like it.

It was hardly an era really they were just playing stripped down hard rock at the right time when the world was getting tired of the larger than life glam style. Nirvana was a good band with great timing is all. It wasnt the first time that has happened if you look back at the 70's.

its just my opinion but Nirvana and Pearl Jam were far from the best of that stuff.
Soundgarden i loved Screaming Trees I really liked and I liked Alice in Chains also but that took awhile.
But your point about whiney self absorbed music is very much a truism of most grunge music. Alot of it was depressing.
But there was some good stuff you just had to get past Kurt and Eddie Vedder ( btw before Vedder the band was called Mother Love Bone.. different singer and it was alot better than that the man who could only sing one note Eddie Vedder. I cant believe he is a singer )

It has its place. Some of the pre-grunge college radio lo-fi stuff was fantastic. Nirvana were good but not great. The problem was, their success started a big horrible bandwagon thing and loads of people jumped on it and made loads of cash. Thats why Curt Cobain hated the whole success thing. The same thing happened with 'Britpop' in the 90s. A few really good bands started something interesting then the cash-in started and the record companies created a monster. The overall memory of Britpop is that it was all f**king awful.

I hated pearl jam but I love the Nirvana Nevermind Album. Also Chris Cornell(soundgarden) was the greatest voice of the grunge era, not to mention he's now in audioslave and still going strong.

Some of it was good. Alot of it was really bad. I liked some of Nirvana and Pearl Jam's songs but Alice in Chains was a better band than both of them.
The problem came when a lot of bands tried to also be Nirvana and Pearl jam.

Rock has definitely evolved to keep up with the times. Not only the sound has changed due to better and more technology being implemented into the instruments, but also the tone of the lyrics. Whether it was the 'tame' expressions made in the 40's and 50's to the more explicit, direct and socially involved lyrics of today. Another thing to consider is the induction of other styles of music into this genre such as Ska, Hip-Hop, Pop, Electronic, and Jazz due to the different cultural involvements in society.

Disagree, but then I'm not one for really classifying music by genres and eras. I just like what I like and it so happened there was a hell of a lot of good, classic music that came out of this "era".
And without it, would we have Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters today?

If anyone's pinning you down, putting headphones on and forcing you to listen to grunge, either phone the police or take up bodybuilding. And anyway, if you think grunge was the most overrated era of rock, you clearly haven't listened to much NWOBHM.
