I currently have DSL from SBC and the modem they supplied to me is installed in the kitchen where I have my laptop (it's out of the way of any potential spills and stuff). However, my room has a phone jack and I'm wondering, can i put another modem in my room? How many DSL Modems can I have in my home?

You can have 2,000 if you have the space, but only one connected. ~
For additonal computer hookups, get a Linksys router. Wired or wireless.

If the phone jack in your room is running off another telephone number you could get a second DSL account. Otherwise, if it's the same phone number as in the kitchen... then no, you cannot hook up another modem to it.

What you could do is go to Bestbuy or Walmart or any computer shop, and pick up a wireless router and a wireless adaptor card or usb device for your other computer.

Hook the dsl modem to the router and configure it for a wireless signal throughout your house.

well you can only have one modem for one account. if you want to access the web in another room you would either order a ADSL MODEM/ROUTER from SBC or purchase one of the net. another choice would be to be a separate router. of which you then can put both in your room. your laptop will need a network card so that it can access the internet.

first setup option
1-buy a adsl/router-install in bedroom. (price point $20-$50)
2-buy a laptop network card (same price point)

second setup option
1-use existing modem provided by SBC
2-buy a router
3-buy a laptop network card

ps- most newer laptops come equip with network card

gl-hope this helps

as many modems as you want to have in your house but only one will be able to connect to SBC's dsl DSLAM at any one time.
If the DSL modem you have only has one ethernet port then you need a switch or a router so that you can connect more.

you can actually plug in a dsl modem in your room if you want but you will have to unplug the other one at that point in time for the one in your room to connect up and work.
I have known people that do this. and just switch back and forth cuz they dont want to run an ethernet cable for their gaming console.
