Your question has struck a funny bone with me.
As I am involved in creative writing, I wanted a typewriter earlier in the summer. I went to several stores and eventually found myself in a Circuit City. I asked the young man at the service counter if he had typewriters. He said, "sure, on cd or vhs".
That is a true story.
Yes you can still buy them Some of the big box discount stores carry them at Christmas. Office supply stores carry them year around. In larger cities , "business machines" stores still stock them also.

My old babysitter used to have one. When I was little I used to play on it for hours. I was fasinated on how the buttons made the shapes on the paper :P I typed complete jibberish

I see one every day at work and, oddly enough, someone actually uses it. I don't know if they still make them. Probably.
