Charcoal is better for flavor but gas is more convenient. Gas is more economical if you want to use the grill to replace your stove in the summer (as I do), since you will be cooking for a short time and will end up wasting lots of charcoal. If you want to improve the flavor of a gas grill try adding some wet cedar or hickory wood chips. From a health standpoint gas is better. Charcoal produces more carcinogens when cooking meat as does cooking over a very hot fire. You can adjust a gas grill to cook as slow as you want (I've even baked a pizza in mine).

Go out and buy a charcoal chimney and a new bag of briquettes. what you have sound like they are wet or got wet. Follow the directions for using the chimney on the link below and enoy your meal. Ive never had a problem lighting briquettes or natural charcoal using a chimney, unless it got wet.
