Obviously, everyone's taste in music varies. Beyond that, there is a herding instinct everyone has that extends into almost everything including; musical tastes, fashions, and even foods people eat.

There is safety in numbers, and teens especially feel it as their bodies and minds develop. They adopt the same musics their friends listen to generally. This is not done out of a genuine like or dislike of what they hear, rather what will make them appear acceptable to their peer group, and fulfilling a perceived identity within that group.

Hopefully, as one matures and peer acceptance drops away with regards to musical selection, more individualistic choices will be made musically. The mature individual relies on their mind and openess of thought when listening to music, and judging it's values.

Executives are good at selling stuff. Especially to teens because of how many watch TV and how they're exposed to so many ads. They know what teens like and they sell it to them. Obviously, by the music that's coming out today (lip synchers, tenny boppers, fake "punk" bands and label fitters that have pretty faces), teens don't know jack dirt about music. But it's not everybody. I'm 15 and me and most of my friends listen to old classic rock and reggae/ska/mento. I also personally listen to alot of jazz, blues and motown. Infact, the only artists today that I think are good (today meaning released first album in the year 2000+ are Coldplay, Bedouin Soundclash, The White Stripes/The Raconteurs, Audioslave and Keane. There may be more, but that's all I can think of at the moment.

I notice you didn't add your music preferences to the query. So tell us, what worthless crap music do you listen to?

:Edit:
"phat: is very simple I can listen from Classical Bach Verdi Chaikovsky, Bethoveen, Brahms"

Actually I'm more of a Mozart & Paganini fan myself but I also add that to Death Metal, Hardcore Punk, Early Jazz & Swing and a ton of other genres in between. It's called Music Appreciation 101, try it sometime and quit bashing people who have other musical tastes other than your one LONE genre. How Boring!

Btw, that's "Beethoven" & "Tchaikovsky"
If your going to listen to them at least spell their names right.

Because corporate executives deal out the money and the goods. Without them modern music as we know it would be nothing. Everyone from the record companies to the booking agencies have everything to do with this but yet unfortunitely without these people it'd be tough to market any music these days even with social networking sites like MySpace and YouTube, the people with the money from now on will always have the main say in what goes on in the music industry.

Well, in the US, most of the people are brain-dead and have no ability to listen to a band and decide for them self if they like it or not. The same goes for TV shows and movies. They need the media to tell them what's "hot" before they decide to like something.

Popular music is popular because (a) it's just that good, (b) the music industry makes more money when the artist has a pretty face
