It's closer to 85 percent than 99 percent. 99 percent would be more like birth control. Condoms however can easily break, tear, etc..

Hey Anaid.
It is true that the effectiveness % are different in different sources. There are 2 ways in which it fails.
One, if its is defective. If it is used after expiry, long exposure to light or with any other lotion - there are chances that it may tear.
second if not used properly.
By its own fault, a condom could fail to protect in less than 1 case per 100, about 99% effective.
But in todays era, even if one is using other method of birth control pills- condom is the best choice for STD protection.

For couples using only condoms as birth control, the usual effectiveness is about 85%, however this number is lower then the "perfect use" number of 99% because of human error. This human error includes forgetting to put the condom on in the heat of the moment.
So as long as you're using them and using them properly you've got good protection. If you're using them improperly or neglecting to use them on occasion it drops. A lot.

In my experience they are 80-90% effective when used properly and that would also include using water based lubrication to reduce friction which will lessen the chance of it breaking and the female condoms are more effective because they don't require an erection and are made of polyurathane(sp) which is stronger than latex.

It is not fail proof. Many a times the best condoms have torn inside a woman. But usually the effectiveness is nearly 95-99%.

A condom can be 100% effective if it's used correctly...before, during, and after having sex...and if it doesn't malfunction. And for those who use it incorrectly, it's helpful to have a backup form of birth control in place...such as a foam. In my experience, it's been 100% effective for many years.

I believe the 99% is when used correctly and the 85% is usually when something goes wrong...sometimes people might not even know they're doing it wrong, or they might unknowingly use an old one or something...

The 85% is due to user error. So far, for me it's been 100% (knock on wood)
