I asked this question because I got caught and complain from my present bosses while I looked for internal job of the company and somebody called for reference check. Bosses complained why I didn't tell them before going to the interview. I believe, normally when people look for job, they don't need to tell their present boss until they make sure they get a new job. Am I right?

Yes you are right, If you are looking for a new job while you are still at your current job, you should not tell your boss about until you have got the new job. Also maybe should not list your current bosses as a reference for the simple fact they would let your current bosses know about your interest in a new job.

It can be done.

However, a word of warning: it depends on the climate at your current job. Some employers will let an employee go as soon as they know they are looking.

Hopefully, your employer isn't like that and is accommodating to your needs.

Personally, I wouldn't give notice until I had something else lined up. Once you give notice, the current employer has every right to interview and hire someone for your position. If you don't find anything new, you could be out of a job.

It depends on how accepting your boss is. My boss told me that whenever I want to look for a new job, I should let her know so she can start looking for a replacement. In fact, she encourages me to not stay at this company too long. Also, if you use someone as a reference, you need to ask them first.

I don't think that typically people disclose that info to their bosses. You are right.

It is also your choice if you tell anyone or not - so your supervisors' complaints are moot. But to prevent something like this from happening, you should have informed the ones that you interviewed with that you had not informed your supervisors, and therefore some discression should be used when acquiring references.
