I know what the original crests look like -- not the ones in the Harry Potter movies, but the original ones -- but where did we get them? Did some edition of the books include color photos of them, or something? I'm talking about these:

well none of them are necessarily the original ones, because i dont think there is an actual illustration in the books of all the crest, so people just probably came up with a bunch of different ones, because i have seen many different versions

Err not really clear on what you're saying but the houses came about by the four founders of Hogwarts, Gordic Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowano Ravenclaw and Salazar Slytherin.

The animal you see on the crest were selected by them and the color also by them.

Looks like the crests from the Harry Potter Lexicon to me. Maybe they got them from there.

I'm not positive, but I think those pictures came from cards that came with Chocolate Frogs.
