They were two opposing political parties in the early part of the Nineteenth Century. The last Federalist President was John Adams. The first Democratic-Republican President was Thomas Jefferson. The Federalists believed in more involvement by the Federal government in the conduct of the nation and its affairs. The Democratic-Republican party believed that the States, individually and collectively, were to govern in most matters.
