Both are great players... both have their strengths and weaknesses... Shaq is what 5 years older than Duncan, so Shaq is on his way down while Duncan turned it up down the stretch and in the playoffs particularly on defense.

Any NBA team owner would have paid big money to get either one of those guys as a #1 draft pick back in the day, or, if they were both still young today and just coming out of colleges any NBA team owner would probably do anything in the world to get either player.

Shaq 4 NBA rings in a 15 year NBA career with future almost guaranteed NBA Hall of Famer Kobe in his prime or probable future NBA Hall of Famer in D. Wade in his prime

Duncan 4 NBA rings in the last 8 years with the first two NBA rings with future NBA Hall of Famer David Robinson on the backside of his NBA career and the last two NBA rings with no current current candidates or locks on the NBA Hall of Fame for the future.

In other words, Duncan has done more in less time with less than has Shaq.

I personally think that Duncan is a mature unique team player while San Antonio Cole High School grad Shaq, I don't think has ever gotten over David Robinson arriving as the #1 pick of the first round in San Antonio while Shaq was just starting to break out in his high school career here in San Antonio which may have caused some of that immaturity and jealousy as did certain events while Shaq in his first 2 years in the NBA with Orlando always had his father, still living in San Antonio, trying to walk onto the court to argue with the NBA refs.

It must be embarrassing to be 7 feet tall and weigh 300 pounds and be in the NBA and one of your parents is coming out of the stands everytime you play in San Antonio which resulted in two ejections of Shaq's father from Shaq's first 2 games played in San Antonio in the NBA back in Shaq's Orlando days.

Your stats are kind of off as Duncan has a career 50.9 FG% average having never shot less than 48.4% which he did in 2005-2006 when he played all year with a foot injury similar to Cleveland's Hughes in the 2007 NBA playoffs. Duncan shot 50.8% from the field and not the 43% shown in the original post for the regular season of 2001-2002.

Also, a previous response lists the NBA All Defense team which was only started in 1969 which was Bill Russell's last year in the NBA; otherwise, you would see Bill Russell right at the top with 13 All NBA 1st or 2nd team awards.

The star players around Tim Duncan are not as good as Super stars around Shaq when he won those rings. This means that Tim Duncan WAS the main guy on his championship teams, which gives him an edge over Shaq, with all due respect to Shaq and other players.

Duncan clearly has the better all around game. It's hard to rate Shaq because he always had that unfair advantage over every other player because of his massive frame. Believe it or not I always felt that Shaq underachieved statistically during his career. If you look at all the touches he's had down in the post he should have averaged more points per game during his career. Wilt C. is the only other comparible center in the context of style of game with Shaq. Wilt couldn't shoot free throws like Shaq. Shaq should have been putting up numbers like Wilt did. Duncan gets the nod with me, because he does the other things on the court a little better.

Good job looking up their best statistical years (where is Shaq's turnover stat?).

Now, look at defense. Check out this list. Look where Timmy D is (#3) and look where Shaq is listed (scroll wayy down).

A Shaq team has been swept from the playoffs 6 times! 3 times with Orlando (including in the NBA Finals), 2 times with the Lakers (once by Timmy D and the Spurs) and 1 time with Miami.

How many times has a Timmy D team been swept from the playoffs? Once! (By Shaq and the Lakers)

Just some food for thought while you're trying to decide between the two.

Tim Duncan has the misfortune of enjoying in San Antonio. enable me make sparkling that it is not meant to criticize the spectacular San Antonio portion of which i'm a resident. The misfortune I talk of is created with the aid of our gracious biased media. If Tim had performed in l. a. or ny, the place you've actual no longer something communities, and nevertheless get all the best time insurance, he does no longer have been seen as between the best-ever greats in basketball he could be a celeb of unparalled proportions. Why our society is so possesed with action picture "stars" whom set on the sidelines at Lakers video games, Jack Nickolson, is previous me. They advantageous as hell do no longer upload something to the activity. besides, back on your question: Tim Duncan has greater skills in his left little toe than Shaq has in his entire physique. Then in basic terms reason Shaq is and or has been interior the NBA is merely brute length and twiddling with the Lakers gave him the added exposure. to no longer point out the inept NBA officers that have and nevertheless proceed to allow him the use his weight and capability to dedicate offensive fouls after offensive fouls without calling them what they're. particularly some the time no calls or referred to as on the protective participant whom curiously have no spectacular to any portion of the floor whilst Shaq makes a decision to flow to the basket. Basketball is and could be a activity of skills without place for "deisel" autos or trains. Shaq could have been suited interior the NFL the place he could have been uncovered as merely yet another surprisingly face. be counted of certainty, i'm embarassed to admit that Shaq went to severe college in San Antonio.

td, but as you said, just by a small margin.
maybe shaq was more dominant in a game, but td has always been consistent. so maybe shaq went from level 7 to 10 in a 3 years span, then come back to 7 2 years after that. but td has been on 9 since he arrived in the league.
what i'm saying is maybe shaq was better in his prime, but his prime was only for a short period of time.

They're both outstanding players. I respect both of them. But like you, I'd have to say that Duncan is the better player, by a thread. He's been so dominant every year and has always had a good team. Shaq is close behind.

Duncan. Shaq used to be in his prime while Duncan was just learning how to lead a time. Now it seems Shaq's legacy lives on in Duncan. Timmy all the way.

I think Duncan's is better in technique like bank shots,
and free throws. Shaq is just much better physically
and has better defense and higher field goal percentage.
For me I have seen them go head to head, and Shaq always
gets the best of Duncan, Also Shaq draws more double
teams than duncan. Having been a Laker and Suns Fan,
I think if Shaq was here Lakers would still be killing the Suns,
but the Suns have a chance against Duncan and SPURs.

So based on head to head, I take Shaq over Duncan,
based on drawing double teams, I take Shaq over Duncan,
based on post Defense I take Shaq, Amare does pretty
good against Duncan, but Shaq shuts him down,
and based on Field Goal percentage I take Shaq.
Bottom line is take them both at their prime, no one
is afraid of going up against Duncan, but when Shaq
was in his Prime (and even now), player are just
afraid of how he will punish them inside.

57% vs 43% thats the determining factor. Shaq
without a doubt.
