Be honest. Tell her it's slang for when someone has sex for the first time and then ask if she has any other questions. She's old enough to understand that. Chances are she just say "Oh, ok" and leave it at that.
she will just get annoyed if you try to dance around it, just be honest. If you are honest and direct, don't give any more info then what she asks for, chances are she'll come to you again if she has another sex related question. you may not like it, but would you rather her learn everything from her friends?

Explain the body and the functions--first opportunity you get---then next, talk about attractions, emotions and hormones---then, sit down and talk about love and marriage---then sit down and talk about sex--the emotional acts and the physical acts and the differences. And talk about responsibilities and disease and protection---Get books and discuss these things one step at a time--never all at once--crude terms should be referred to as only being street talk--use real terms--and names of body parts----and how they work. Keep it all on an appropriate level--maybe the doctor has some books. Keep it all healthy and respectful--make sure the kid is understanding what you say. Don't rely on school to do this. And tell the child to ignore what kids say--it is wrong info and can lead to trouble. Good luck

Ask her what she THINKS it means. Either way, she still needs to know the true answer. If its OK with her parents, inform her. Otherwise, tell her that your mom would be happy to sit down and have "the talk" with her. I think 12 is old enough to know about her body. Its nothing gross. Its just the hymen tearing, which can happen with sex or insertion of a tampon.

I didn't know it was slang for losing your virginity until like 2 weeks ago.... I am 14.
I know about the birds and the bees i just don't have friends who talk about stuff like that because it never comes up.... we tend not to use slang even if we did so just ask her what she thinks it means then tell her straight up since i think that you are the in charge one.

If you're the parent, then I would sit her down and tell her that it's a crude way to say losing ones virginity. As her sister, you might want to direct that question to mom. She might want to field it.

However, if you have that talk with her, please make sure you take the time to tell her all the reasons why she shouldn't be having sex and should wait until she's MUCH older. Talk to her about the risks that come with sex. If she's going to know what sex is, she needs to know all that comes with it. Only know some information can be damaging in the long run.

Good luck.

While it could mean any number of things, its most common meaning to that age group is used to describe homosexuals or homosexual behavior. Girls do not typically have as much of a problem with gay males, and she probably doesn't mean it in a hurtful way, but she may suspect that he is indeed of an alternative lifestyle.

ahaha! my 10 year old was signing "...I touch myself..." in the grocery store and everyone stopped to look at her...
She thought it was because of her great signing. I took her aside and explained what the song meant.
Kids need to know what this stuff means or it can put them in embarrassing situations. Better they get the info from home than from their friends who don't have all the facts!

you put it in between your thumb and index finger and you push very hard.
thats all she needs to know before she ends up wanting her "cherry popped" and shes on here asking how to take a pregnancy test.
or tell her that your parents will explain so much better...

Have your parents speak to her about it first. If you are the only one in charge of her, you explain it to her in proper terms. Tell her it is slang for losing your virginity.
