As I'm sure you know by now...the caterpillar needs to be eating fresh milkweed leaves to live. It can get its water from them as well as food. It won't last long loose in your house. Unless it escaped to go pupate, in which case a coccoon should be hanging somewhere. If you mean the adult, it should be flying to a window somewhere, or maybe fell down near a window it was trying to get out of? It can't survive loose in the house, either. It needs fresh nectar from flowers.

Its probably trying to get out to find food. Do you have monarch friendly plants in your house?
