A good carpenter's tape measure will measure down to 1/16th of an inch at the least. (Some will measure down to 1/64th of an inch) For your purpose, 1/16th of an inch will be accurate enough.

Boxing in an A/C unit is not recommended. This will reduce the air flow required for the unit to operate efficiently. An A/C unit installed in an inside corner of a house will quite opperate inefficiently. There must be horizontal air flow to move the heat away from the condenser otherwise the air around the condenser will continue to rise. This can lead to premature failure of the A/C unit.

If you do decide to build a frame around th A/C unit, make sure it is done in a way that the heat will be remove from the A/C unit.

CHECK WITH THE MANUFACTURE OF THE A/C UNIT FIRST

The most accurate would be to hold the piece in place and marking where you want to make the cut. If you are mitering the corners at 45 degrees start on the bottom and mark both sides allowing enough on both ends for the miters. Remember that the marks are the short points of each miter. Nail the piece in place, then cut a miter on thew next piece on one end and hold it tight to the piece installed, then mark the other end and install the piece working around to completion. If you are square cutting then the 2 sides should be installed first ending flush at top and bottom of the unit, perhaps slightly longer to ensure a good fit on your trim. Once you have the 2 sides installed measure or scribe the top and bottom pieces cut and install
