If there is not pressure in the system, sure there is a leak.
the easy way to check for leaks: put some dye into the system as if you charge it. This will show where the leak or leaks are, because it has color the you will see with a lamp.

Pressurize it with a Nitrogen leak detector. This way you won't be messing with the atmosphere by releasing refrigerant into the air as it leaks down or when you repair it. And yes, even the "new" stuff has some environmental impact.
