No. Photographers are just the same as everybody else. If they're in uniform the law of armed conflict classifies them as combattants. If they're not in uniform, they are just plain civilians unless they are clearly working with one of the combattant forces in which case they are potentially spies. Otherwise, they are potential "collateral damage" candidates of the first order.

The press is not considered 'high priority'. Remember, the bad guys want to be seen on tv too. Especially American tv. Every year (even when we're not at war) many members of the press are killed in the line of fire. It's the risk they take. They live AND sometimes die by that risk. They're a different kind of soilder. Instead of pointing & shooting guns, they're pointing & shooting cameras.

No, they are not, I have heard of reporters & photographers getting killed many times, they choose to risk their lives when they go after a story, no matter how far they have to go to get it.
