Actually Houston is not that bad a place. As has been mentioned, it is hot and humid in the summer and there are not a lot of outdoor activities, but there are also many good qualities as well. The cost of living is very low for a city the size of Houston. With the exception of high property taxes (house prices are cheap though), everything else is cheap and convenient. Houston has a diverse range of people and restaurants. It also has two good sized airports with one being the hub for Continental, so you can get cheap direct flights to most anywhere. Houston is also fairly centrally located so you can get to either coast in about 3 - 4 hours, as well as Canada and Central America. The Houston housing market is one of the few places that is still growing and unemployment is low as most of the energy companies have their headquarters in Houston. If you want outdoor activities, you can drive to the beach in Galveston (heard it is not that nice though), or if you prefer the mountains, Austin is a few hours drive away and has hills (maybe not quite mountains) and also many cultural activities (think Austin City Limits). Hope this helps.

Houston is a great place to live.
Cost of living is cheap. You can get a nice 3000 Sq FT house for $200K easily. Compare that to California, which can cost you at least $1 Million. Food is cheap, both at home as well as eating out - so we are among the fattest city.
People are friendly. People here have the Southern Hsopitality mentality - and we show it. I love to be able to be anywhere in Houston and just talk to strangers - and people don't mind.
Houston has lots of great entertainment - from sports (MLB, NFL, NBA, WNBA, MLS), musics (huge rock venue), classicals (one of the best opera companies and ballet companies in the country), theater, as well as driving distance to Galveston, San Antonio, Austin, Louisiana, Dallas.
Houston also has decently good weather if you don't mind heat, good access to the world through huge airport system, world class medical center, not too bad school system with excellent colleges.
I highly recommend Houston.

i could say there is a lot to do right here. Why? by fact a super sort of folk come right here by fact there is not any longer something to do everywhere else around small cities on the brink of Houston, yet to stay right here? NO!!! Why? it is a volatile place. site visitors is dense lots and there are wrecks each and every morning i bypass to paintings and human beings get shot, run over, and gets chaotic. the reason I stay right that's by fact it is the only place i can make a living, however the worldwide could properly be risky like that, so as that shouldn't unavoidably provide up you. besides i don't be responsive to with regard to the taxes by fact I stay in a abandoned extreme secure practices place and it is extremely hidden, so my tale is diverse than maximum others. My suggestion to you in case you like to visit Houston, circulate someplace smaller, yet on the brink of it. that's basically my attitude.

I live in Houston right now and I am desperately trying to find a way out! True unemployment is very low and so is the cost of living but the humidity is HORRIBLE! So is the pollution from the chemical plants. It is number 9 or 10 for most polluted cities in the U.S. It is a big city so there is a lot to do but who wants to leave their house when the it is 100 degrees outside with a humidity of 95%! I guess it just depends on what you like.

To the above poster, Houston does not have Six Flags anymore..............where have you been?
Personally I would pick San Antonio or Austin over Houston. They are a lot more fun. Houston is just a city with no zoning, too spread out, no true outdoor activity, horrible pollution and is just not that fun.
The only upside to Houston is its ethic diversity, work opportunities and restaurants but everything you can find in Houston, you can find in any other big city.

Houston is the last place in Texas I would relocate. The weather is oppressive and the city has very little flavor. It is not very refined or sophisticated compared to other cities, even though it is so large. The pollution and traffic are also trying.

I moved here from NYC 13 years ago and have learned to appreciate it. People are friendly and the cost of living is low. Great restaraunts & shops. Yes, summer is hot but there is a/c everywhere you go. Pretty much the same weather as Miami. It's laid out alot like LA, you have to have a car as everything is spread out. Try finding a place inside Loop 610 to make life easier.

I grew up in Houston. It's a lot like Los Angeles now. A TRUE melting pot.....in more ways than one!
It's humid. It's fast. And it's a crazy ride.
All in all, a terrific experience. If you have kids, look to the outskirts for better schools....(Kingwood, Friendswood, etc)

Its pretty cool. You have Galveston Tx with beaches 45 miles away. There are places you don't want to be caught in at night unless heavily armed. But the weather here in Tx is strange when its 90 its HOT..We had snow in april but 2 days later it was 93, and we had never ending rain in june and july..In Texas if you don't like the weather wait 30 minutes it will change.Think I am lying check this link out when it snowed on the beach in Galveston..http://www.bayreef.com/snow/snow.htm

If you like the feeling of yourself baking in the sun then yes. It's SO humid year-round. But it's near the beach so it's fun to go to in the Summer.
