me's book says they are verbs , eloculatory interjections in nature, that define speech rhythms, and indicate person, they are usually preceeded by a proper name as 'How are you Jack' inquired John, 'I am fine' replied his brother ' etc.. I have heard them referred to as pearls although this a colloquiellism.
