The rain forests in South America have been cut down to provide both lumber and make room for large cattle ranches. It comes down in hundreds of acres a day.

Most logging is done for the lumber industry either directly or indirectly if the land is being cleared for a development or a business or a farm. It hurts habitats of animals and increases soil erosion.

Wood is harvested from forests all over the world. Even here where I live in the midwest there is a timber industry. If cutting is done selectively it can improve forests. It's only a disaster if to many trees are removed faster than they grow back.

I own 173 acres in Pennsylvania. Currently it is fully wooded.
I intend to clear cut 50 acres. 25 acres will be used for a
home for my wife and I. On the other 25 acres I intend to build a
40,000 square foot office building and an 80,000 square
foot sound stage. The rest of the land will be left as is.

The environmental impact will be very slight.
