A large number of Irish did settle in the South- ships from places like Savannah and New Orleans would take cotton to the mills of England, and bring immigrants on the return trip. The Irish in the South never established the politics, churches, and unions, etc. that they did in Boston, NYC and Chicago, but they were a presence in the South.
