Biblical answer? The tribes were scattered to the ends of the earth and their languages confused.

Evolutionary answer ... remember we haven't always had transport, telephones, televisions, modern weapons. As recently as 500 years ago, most people on one side of Europe wouldn't have known the other side of Europe even existed! How would an Australian Aborigine know there were people who lived in Igloos? So they established their own basis for life, rules, cultures etc.

As these countries have discovered one another, that's when the fun begins! Oh look at that ... they've got LOTS of land ... or oil or gold ... we'll take that.

Those clashes of culture and needs, combined with the administrative difficulties of managing one big country like 'The World' ... (all from Canberra of course :- ... ahhh ... see ... how would you resolve that little question)) ... have led to the ever shifting thing called 'geography'.

I reckon that's a good thing

They are a European Idea that spread across the world, even to places to people among whom it was a strange idea. The Berlin Conference1884 is an example of this. Others through history have used other forms of social organization (and still do). Example: Civil war like the one in Rwanda...It's a country, but many still claimed higher loyalty their tribe (whether due to ethnicity, custom, kinship) than they did the country.

Why not?

Plus, humans need rulers. Rulers need people, and therefore places to rule. We simply dont act as a group, humans need divisions.

Capitalist opposition. without it , we could stay in hundreds of tribes, counties and self reliant islands, who could all have their very own languages. (we've some two hundred international locations and fantastically much 7000 languages left)
