It has Liberty walking on the front of the coin the date on it is 1996. On the back it has an eagle and says 1oz fine silver-one dollar. I can't seem to find a listing for it on any coin appraisal sites only walking liberty half dollars.

Nice find. This type coin has been made by the US Mint every year since 1986. Assuming that yours is still in as-new condition, it's actually one of the better dates in the series.
The link below is a listing of all 1996 eagle dollars currently on eBay. As you can see, there aren't many.

What you have is a Silver Eagle Bullion coin. They are collected as well as put away as a way to invest in the silver market. They are worth more for the silver than the dollar on them. You happen to have the one date that is some what scarce for it has the lowest mintage so far 3,603,386. The 1996 is selling for $64.50 in one dealer ad I see the coin must be in mint state. Of course a dealer will pay less.

You have a Silver Eagle. It is a real coin that is silver, not the nickle-copper clad that most coins we see. Hang on to it and do not touch it with your bare fingers. If it is not in a protective sleave or plastic case, go to a coin dealer and buy one for it. The cases are round and inexpensive and will protect the coin.

Yup. It's real. It's a bullion piece.
You should be able to find it here: http://www.pcgs.com/prices/index.chtml

My guess is that if you haven't covered it with scratches and finger prints, it's worth $10-13.
