i can't remember the name, but there's a boatman who will ferry the deceased to the after life, but you're to pay it for safe crossing.

I put an answer in a different posting of your question.

If the penny was accidentally dropped, then the old saw of "pick it up and have good luck" is probably the one that applies.

If it was placed there, if could have been used by someone to pay the dead person whose grave it was for a small amount of earth from the grave.

In santeria, they sometimes 'use' the dead to do things. So they pay them in pennies. why pennies I never found out. Usually though they bury them near the head stone. It might have been some dabbler trying to put a curse on an ex or something stupid like that.

There's an old tradition that if you put a penny on someone's grave, then their soul can pay the ferryman to take them across the river styxs (pronounced sticks) so they can get to heaven. Whoever put it there probably still believes in it.

Did you know this person? Pennies or objects as such can be signs from God that the person who has died is O.K. and that they are watching over family members. You may want to contact the mother, father, etc. and tell them that.
