Since American government works through many people each individually motivated, there are many reasons. For some it's geopolitical and think of Israel as our military ace-in-the-hole. Others still mistakenly believe that it is part of conditions to usher in the second coming. And yet there are those of Jewish faith and blood who are sympathetic to the cause of Israel.

Israel is a country that has been beset by wars and terrorism since its inception. Therefore a huge amount of money has to be spent just for defense - to survive.

America and Israel are allies and it is in America's self-interest that Israel survive - you can decide for yourself what America's self-interest is, in this case, but you can be sure, that self-interest is involved.

Israel is a developing country and its greatest resource is its people. For example, there are many hi-tech companies here.

Still there are many poor people including many poor children.

So Israel is not a rich country like the Scandinavian countries or Japan, but rather a struggling country that is dependent on financial aid. One day, hopefully, Israel will be more independent because all money given has strings attached.

Officially it's because Israel is 'our friend in the region', and because Israel's assured continued existence brings 'stability' to the region.

We also pay Israel specifically not to attack Egypt. During President Carter's administration, Israel and Egypt signed a peace treaty, the Camp David Accords, for which both countries were promised generous continuing foreign aid. In fact, Egypt is the second biggest recipient of American foreign aid, after Israel. So far they've kept up their part of the deal. Neither has invaded the other.

And, just like -all- foreign aid, you know it's not exactly a gift to the country. We don't go over there with pallets full of $100 bills (as we did in Iraq and they disappeared). We 'give' them the money by depositing it in their name in an American bank, and we usually tell them how they have to spend it--for instance they have to spend it in the US, buying stuff from those US corporations that contribute the most to whichever political party is in power. So it's a lot like the defense budget--we spend the money to stimulate our own economy and to bring forth more political contributions to whichever party is in power.

Whichever party is -out- of power loudly decries this corrupt practice as no better than bribery. But when the government changes hands--as is happening today before our eyes--the parties change places on this as well, the new -in- party decides it wasn't such a bad practice after all, and the new -out- party begins whining and moaning about bribery.

How do you know how much money Israel has? why do you assume it is a lot?

And by the way, what do you care? America also gives Egypt a lot of money too? Are you going to start griping about that?

simple, political manipulation.

America "feels" its their business what goes on in the Middle East and in particular Israel.

While in all reality the money that is given is insignificant compared to Israel's GDP it buys a lot of political influence.

Basically when America says jump, Israel says how high.

The AIPAC ( American Israel Political lobby) has a huge influence in DC. That together with the media which is largely pro Israel is the reason. If you search for the words Israel Lobby and then click on the Israel US Foreign Policy by John Mearsheimer of Harvard and read the PDF you will truly learn the details that most Americans are not aware of.

The UN is so beaten by the US, EU and Israel, that it no longer even attempts to pretend that it is anything except a rubber stamper and co-conspirator in this obvious and troubling attempt to not only redraw the map of the Arab and Muslim world, but also to set new rules that obliterate the sovereign rights of every country in that region, except of course Israel’s.

Because if they stopped providing these funds the israelis would reveal everything about any political figure that voted to stop sending the money. Not a single politician is clean and they will never oppose israel for that reason. The israelis use their intel people for political gain in the US.
