Vitamin C is the most likely nutritional deficiency that can cause gum problems. CoQ10 insufficiency can also be an issue (especially if you are taking statin drugs such as Lipitor).
50% of Americans consume less than the RDA for vitamin C. 25% consume less than HALF of the RDA, putting them at serious risk for developing Scurvy!
It is important to understand that nutrients work in harmony. All essential nutrients are required for optimum health. Additionally, any diet that is inadequate in one nutrient (e.g. Vitamin C) is also likely to be inadequate in most other nutrients.
Are you eating 5-9 fresh fruits and vegetables each day? Are you eating 3 servings of WHOLE grains each day? Are you taking a quality vitamin/mineral supplement daily? (as recommended by the American Medical Association).
Red and sore gums can be a sign of a serious health problem. It may be wise to see your medical provider for a proper evalution and to see a licensed and trained nutritionally oriented medical practitioner for a thorough nutritional evaluation.
Best wishes and good luck.

Red and sore gums is one of the symptoms of scurvy, ie Vitamin C deficiency. Try taking Vitamin C, first. If that doesn't work, you may have a deeper problem.

As an ex dental assistant, the only thing I know is gingivitis, that is when you don't brush and floss regularly, and your gums get irritated from the buildup plague and tartar. Your gums get spongy and after the dissease progresses your teeth fallout. Anyway, just go to the dentist, as I'm sure there are other causes for this.

Hi Tereanea, yes most likely it's Scurvy.
Include vitamin C rich diet in the form of fruits and vegetables or vitamin C supplements. This helps in stemming bleeding and also minimizes the pain. Take moderate dose of these fruits and vegetables like oranges, lemons, grapefruits, kiwi fruits, broccoli, green peppers, tomatoes, cabbage, sprouts and sweet potatoes in your diet. You can also add nutritious milk, liver, kidney and fish which contains good amount of vitamin C, even after cooking and preserving.
Being on grape diet is very helpful in treating scurvy. Grape diet can consist of raw grapes as well as grape juice.
Indian gooseberry contains ample vitamin C which can be used to treat scurvy by including it in your diet.

Scurvy. In fact dentists see signs of this in the mouth long before the symptoms appear elsewhere in the body.

Probably a lack of vitamin C.
I suggest you eat more fresh fruit, floss twice daily, and see a dentist.
