Me too, as a young bride. fortunately, I got out after only 3 years which, in the 70s was almost unheard of. There were no support services or safe houses. Even the police did nothing to help back then. I was lucky. I know of many women who are abused and even a few men. I volunteered as an advocate on call for a rape and abuse crisis center, and then worked for CASA for a year, training advocates for abused and neglected kids...so while it was a very bad thing, and inexcusable, I believe it strengthened me and some very positive things came out of it.

I have found that as I go thru life- things that were devastating to me at the time, always ended with a positive return for me. The people behind those negatives were and still are losers...while I am a successful person who loves herself and life.

Yes, several people, myself included. Nowadays, I don't think that anyone hasn't been touched by domestic violence, either in their own lives, or that of a loved one.

Yes. This woman disappeared into woman's shelter with her two children, and the husband went all around town with a baseball bat looking for them until being picked up. Eventually, he was confined for a few months to undergo sycho tests. They concluded he had committed crimes to tie him over for jail, which got him three years. He misbehaved in jail , hurt a jailer and got 6 more months added on. His wife and children assumed new identities and new social society numbers and moved to the Midwest. The husband, on his release, on finding this out, starting smashing everything he could once he got out of jail. He was rearrested and jailed for 15 more months. That's all I know.

Victims could be either sex ( My own grandmother used to hit my grandfather over the head with wrought iron pans) . Victims should press ch rages and then, go into hiding to protect themselves. Orders of protection are sometimes meaningless papers, because they are often violated.

There's a big list in our family. My husband broke 4 of my ribs when he tossed me across the room. My brother-in-law used to drag his kids down the stairs by their hair before he beat them. Luckily, the violence stopped with my generation. None of my children have married batterers. They saw enough of it to never want it in their lives.
