Well, I'm in college and so far I've freaking failed 1 course and gotten a barely passing (i.e. D or D+) in 3 classes, and I don't know what is wrong with me. I feel like such a failure at this point I don't even want to go on. I honestly attend class regularly, I missed maybe 5 the whole semester. I take notes, I do some of the reading, and yet I fail. My biggest problem I think is when I do reading/review notes I get SO bored I just start falling asleep. It's like taking a sleeping pill. I will read a section 3 times and not be able to comprehend anything it said. Not an exaggeration. I don't know what to do to get my brain to remember the material! It's like it's scrambled in my brain. Suggestions at all would be GREATLY appreciated, as I don't even know if college is worth it if I'm just going to keep failing like an idiot.
Oh, also I don't party or anything like that I swear on my life that I try to study it just doesn't seem to sink in. And I don't do drugs or drink.

You're bored because you're taking courses you don't like. If you enjoyed the courses, you wouldn't find them boring. Still, these are probably basic courses that all first-year students must take. I have a suggestion that might help you. Study with a friend. Sometimes, you can even read to each other and then when one of you has a question, you can stop and discuss it. Also, try to find the core of the text. You're probably trying to memorize every word, and that's impossible. Make cards with the bold heading and then list the important points. Don't give up, it gets easier with time. Also, try not to miss any classes at all. Very often, professors stress the points that will be in the exams and you may have missed some important topics. Good luck. Stay with it.

You might inquire whether your school has a course on how to study. Many do and it can help because there are many students who do not know how to study.
Just a couple of tips though. Studying is like a sprint. You concentrate hard for a few minutes at a time rather than running a marathon where you try and sit and study for a long period of time. You cannot concentrate at the level you need for a long period of time. Maximum study time is no more than an hour at a time, before taking a break. Your brain works too fast and it wanders and you lose concentration.
Also, you need to know how to approach reading the material. Not every sentence you read is of the same importance so don't try to focus at the same level on everything. Again, a course can help you with these and other issues. Part of it may be the courses but that comes with getting a degree. You take a lot of courses that are not a lot of use but that is the price you have to pay.

I went through a similar ordeal. I was so stoked about being in college, but when it came time to study, I got bored even though I loved the subjects. I myself don't party, so I know where you are coming from.
I actually went see a counselor, and it really helped.
Don't think that seeing a counselor makes you any less of a person, it's just sometime we need someone to talk to that will actually listen to us. My counselor really showed me that I CAN do it, and right now I am!
Let's just say my grades are good enough to make honors and the Dean's list.

Yes, retake that biology class... it won't look good on his transcript. He should stay at the community college until he finishes his lower-division requirements, then transfer to a good college for upper division courses that are related to his major. One of my friends took classes at a community college for 2 years, doing his lower-division work, and just transferred to UCLA as an East Asian Studies major. The only way for your son to improve his GPA is if he works hard and studies diligently for those exams. It's up to him.

The school might provide tutors. I also found that many books have a website to help review the material. But some times you just gotta suck it up and read the chapter. and in my mind missing five classes is an issue. only miss when your on your death bed basically.

First try taking classes that interest you. Most importantly study in a group. Group study helps you stay awake and involved in the studying. Try and find people in your classes that are doing well and ask if you can study with them. It will help you concentrate and will help you get more out of your study time.
